Read for the Record
October 8, 2009
Summary Outcomes

Great TEAMWORK!!! Thanks to the combined effort of Team Kids, IUSD, IUCPTA, and the City of Irvine, Read for the Record events occurred in
All 18 IUSD Elementary schools in session
5 Preschools
2 Community Parks
= 3,203 Irvine kids read “The Very Hungry Caterpillar” and participated on Read for the Record!!!
Special Guest Readers across the city included Superintendent Dr. Gwen Gross, Mayor Sukhee Kang, Irvine Police Chief David Maggard, Commander Mike Hamel, Orange County Fire Authority Captain George Casario, Police Officers Gibbs & Hom, CSO Rahn, Hyatt employees, and last but certainly not least....the awesome girls from Girl Scout Troop 323!
City-wide Book Drive:
4,520 BOOKS DONATED BY KIDS FOR KIDS!!! Unbelieveable!!
4,031 of the books were donated to the Orange County Early Literacy Program, which brings critical literacy resources to families with children 0 to 5 years of age.
284 were donated to Children’s Hospital of Orange County.
205 were donated to the Usa River Academy Library in Tanzania, supported by the Foundation For Tomorrow, which strives to empower the future of developing nations by educating their youth.
We are continually amazed at the capacity kids have to help others. The 4,520 books were collected by one student at a time, going through his or her own prized collection (with a little help from their parents, teachers, and friends, of course).
According to Jumpstart, the number of books in a home is the single strongest indicator of a child's future reading ability.
Team Kids is so proud to be part of the magic and adventure waiting to be discovered by the thousands of children who will read these 4,520 books!!
