A model public-private partnership that puts our kids in the lead!
Listen to Irvine Police Chief David Maggard share about Team Kids, 10 Year Anniversary Luncheon, 2011
The Team Kids model invites police and fire fighters into elementary schools to serve as powerful role models, mentors and stakeholders in our children’s futures. Public safety officers don’t deliver traditional messages of “don’t do drugs,” and “don’t play with fire.” Instead they support the children’s efforts to tackle critical issues in the community.
Team Kids is powered by innovative partnerships with community stakeholders from education, government, public safety, business, along with a force of volunteers, and other community members. By working in partnership, rather than isolation, Team Kids directly impacts youth and strengthens communities as well as providing children with critical developmental assets, relationships and experiences. Youth grow to see adults in their school and community not as those who tell them what they can’t do, but as supportive role models and mentors who tell them what they can accomplish. This team effort is all about the kids, but it takes everyone working together to truly make a difference.
Exemplifying how much Team Kids programs and kids inspire our partners, OC Fire Authority Captain (ret.) and Founding Team Kids Board President Steve McHale emphatically states that working with Team Kids “is the best part of my career. If I do nothing else, here on out, I’m okay with that. This is the best.”
